Fundamentals of Instructor
Training (FIT)
Audience: Anyone 17 years of age and older
interested in becoming a Health & Safety Services Instructor
Course Content: Introduces American Red Cross
history, structure and activities, provides instruction on
assigning tasks and summarizing, presentation skills, and
how to facilitate discussions and manage small task groups.
Prerequisite: 17 years of age or older
Certificate Received: Fundamentals of Instructor
Training. Candidates must complete an instructor specialty
course (ex. First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor) within 1 year of
completing FIT. The certificate is valid as long as the individual
maintains current American Red Cross instructor authorization.

First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor
Audience: Those interested in volunteering
to teach First Aid and CPR classes to the general public.
In addition to teaching in volunteer courses, authorized instructors
may instruct employees a their place of employment with an
Authorized Provider Agreement on file with the Chapter.
Pre-Course Content: Participants must successfully
complete the written pretest exam and skills evaluation in
order to continue into the instructor course. Participants
will be evaluated on Adult, Child and Infant cardiac and breathing
emergency skills, AED skills, and First Aid skills. The precourse
will be scheduled for approximately 1 hour each.
Instructor Course Content: Includes information
and teaching suggestions to help teach the following basic
level courses: Adult CPR, Infant and Child CPR, First Aid,
AED, or any combination.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of pre-course
session and FIT

certificate (valid 2 yrs)

CPR/AED for the Professional
Rescuer Instructor
Audience: Public Safety personnel, athletic
trainers, lifeguards, emergency response team members, training
academy participants, health care professionals.
Course Content: Trains instructor candidates
to teach how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac
emergencies in adults, infants and children, two-rescuer CPR,
and use of breathing barriers and bag-valve masks.
Prerequisites: 17 years or older, FIT, and
pass the pre-test exam and skills evaluation. Also must be
a current Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED instructor.
Certificates Received: CPR/AED for the Professional
Rescuer Instructor.
Hours: 4
Lifeguard Training Instructor
Audience: Lifeguard candidates, camp counselors,
water safety instructors, swim coaches, public safety personnel,
adult/youth leaders and public.
Course Content: Trains instructor candidates
to teach Lifeguard Training (including first aid), CPR for
the Professional Rescuer, O2 Administration, Bloodborne Pathogens
Training, Preventing Disease Transmission, Automated External
Defibrillation, Lifeguard Management, Lifeguard Instructor
Aide and Community Water Safety, by developing their understanding
of how to use the course materials and methods of conducting
training sessions and evaluating participants' progress.
Prerequisites: 17 years of age and older,
successfully complete written and skills pretest consisting
of Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR for the Professional
Rescuer. Fundamentals of Instructor Training is included in
the training.

Instructor

Water Safety Instructor
Audience: Those interested in teaching others
to swim and to be safe in and around water.
Course Content: The Water Safety Instructor
course provides instructor candidates the training needed
to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water
Safety program by developing their understanding of how to
use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions
and how to evaluate participants' progress. Fundamentals of
Instructor Training is included in this course.
Prerequisites: 16 years of age and older
and pass written and skills pretest.
