Local Red Cross Named ‘Highly Performing Chapter’
North Central Wisconsin Chapter Recognized for Outstanding Service
The North Central Wisconsin Chapter of the American Red Cross has been recognized as one of the most Highly Performing Chapters in the United States . Only 38 out of 759 Red Cross chapters across the country achieved this rating in 2008.
The highest rating of Highly Performing Chapter is given to those chapters scoring 23 – 30 points on the scorecard. The North Central Wisconsin Chapter scored 25 points for 2008 making it a Highly Performing Chapter for two, consecutive years.
“This score is a testament to the outstanding work and fiscal responsibility that the staff and Board of Directors at the local American Red Cross perform to ensure that we exceed our mission of preparing for, preventing and responding to emergencies. We are honored to be recognized as a Highly Performing Chapter,” states Mae Nachman, Regional Executive Director of the North Central Wisconsin Chapter.
Only one other chapter in Wisconsin , the Scenic Bluffs Chapter in La Crosse , received this designation for 2008.
Red Cross Urges Caution in Heating Homes This Winter
Home heating fires are the leading cause of winter fires and third leading cause of deaths.
As temperatures start to dip across the country, the American Red Cross urges families to be cautious when using space heaters and other heating sources and plan ahead for the possibility of a home fire. Fires kill more Americans each year than all natural disasters combined.
Make a Fire Escape Plan . . . Fire escape plans include at least two exit routes for every room and a convenient meeting place at a safe distance from the fire. Escape ladders should be used and stored near windows in floors above ground level, and all family members should know how to locate and use the ladders safely. Families should practice their escape plan at least twice a year.
Simple Tips to Prevent Home Heating Fires
-
Keep all potential fuel sources (newspapers, matches, bedding, clothing, carpets and rugs) at least three feet away from heat sources such as space heaters, fireplaces and stoves.
